Pre and Post Op Surgical Guidelines for Patients
Before Surgery
Follow these guidelines the day before your surgery to ensure that your procedure goes smoothly:
- It is your responsibility to arrange in advance for a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you the first 24 hours after your procedure. You cannot drive yourself or be left alone.
- Notify your physician before coming to the center if there is any change in your physical condition, such as a cold or fever.
- Leave all jewelry and valuables at home. However, you must bring your driver's license and insurance card with you.
- Please do not take any medication after midnight unless instructed by your physician or our center. If you are diabetic or on blood pressure or heart medication, obtain specific instructions from your physician or contact the center.
- You are required to bring a list of all medications and over the counter medications that you currently take.
Day of Surgery
To help us meet all of your needs, please follow these guidelines:
- Please bathe or shower prior to your surgery.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing such as sweat suits and easy-to-button shirts or blouses.
- Leave all valuables, including jewelry and cash, at home. We cannot be responsible for damaged or lost property.
- Be prepared to sign a form giving your consent for the operation. If the patient is under 18, a parent or legal guardian must accompany the patient and sign the consent form.
- Bring all insurance cards and your driver's license with you to the center. See the section on Billing and Insurance.
- Please arrive one hour before your scheduled procedure.
- A nurse will provide you with a patient gown and a bag to store your clothing in before your are escorted to the procedure room. We will also check your temperature, blood pressure and pulse and ask you to empty your bladder before the procedure.
After Surgery
- Before you leave the center you will be given written instructions for your care at home.
- After you have returned home, be sure to follow your doctor's orders regarding diet, rest, medication and activity. Unless directed otherwise, you should start with clear liquids and progress to solid foods. It is not unusual to feel a little sleepy, lightheaded or dizzy for several hours after your procedure. Do not sign any important papers or make any significant decision for 24 hours.
- If you have any questions or problems after surgery , please contact your physician.
- A nurse from Southeastern Pain Specialists Ambulatory Surgery Center will phone you within a few days after your pain procedure to see how your are and answer additional questions you might have.
- Do not drive a car, smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours after your procedure.
